Classic Motor Yacht "Corinella"

British Registered

Twin Screw Miller Fifer Ketch 33 ft.

This unique vessel was built in Millers boatyard, St. Monans, Fife in 1961. As with all Fifers she is built to fishing boat standards and designed to take the ground without harm. Approximately six Miller Fifers were built with twin engine installations and to the best of my knowledge this was the only one fitted with twin Kelvin P4R engines, the most expensive engine option of the time.

The Kelvin is a grade 1 engine designed for the hardest working conditions prevailing such as trawling.Grade 11 is harbour and light commercial duties, grade 111 leisure. Most Fifers of this size are fitted with a single Kelvin P4R developing 20hp. and driving the hull at 6.75 knots, the 40 h.p. (of both combined) achieving 8 kts. under power alone.

She carries 100 gals. of diesel giving 776 miles range at maximum speed on a single engine, 460 miles at maximum on both engines. I find that on a broad reach in a force 3-4 with full sail and one engine at half throttle she achieves an easy 6 kts. for 1/2 gal. per hour. With both engines running I have yet to find a sea that she cannot comfortably head and certainly would not want to be out in one she couldn't manage!

Her sea keeping qualities are well known throughout the type and the inherent strength of her build is simply enormous. I consider the difference between a Miller Fifer and other comparable vessels which followed her design such as Colvics and Fishers is that the latter are designed to survive being caught out in hard weather, whereas the Miller being at heart a fishing vessel is designed to work in hard weather.
